Author Guidelines

We read year-round, but response time varies.

Send written work as an RTF or Word document. For poems using special formatting or poetry-art combinations, a PDF is acceptable and may be useful.

Most submissions are considerd for electronic issues that appear every other month. If your poetry is accepted for publication for an electronic issue, it will appear in PDF format with an author bio and an audio MP3, both of which we will request from authors after acceptance. Authors must provide the bio and MP3 to appear in TAB, though we sometimes accept permission to record audio of a poet's work if physical circumstances make that necessary. For prose contributions, brief audio is optional.

Poems: Submit 3-5 unpublished poems of any length.

Short Essays: Submit an essay of up to 3000 words on aesthetics, the writing process, pedagogy, publishing, or other topics related to poetry and poetics.

Long Essays: Submit a scholarly essay of 3000-8000 words on aesthetics, on theory, or of a literary-critical bent.

Interviews: Submit an interview of 1500-4500 words.

Book Reviews are written by MFA students at Chapman University. If you have a new book available for review, please send it to the Editor at TAB.

Art: An art submission should be a high-quality digital file saved as a JPEG no smaller than 4x5 and no larger than 8x10. For submission purposes, send a low-resolution image file of at least 72 dpi in jpg format. Should your artwork be accepted, you will be required to submit a high-resolution digital image at 300 dpi of the original image. Also, include information about your art background, medium, and size and a brief statement about the artwork itself. Note that the graphics created using PowerPoint, Excel, Word, or WordPerfect are low-resolution images not suitable for professional reproduction.

Other: We are open to a wide range of ways of understanding poetry. If you have an idea for a submission that doesn't fit the above Journal Sections, query the Editor.

Work submitted must be previously unpublished (including websites, Facebook, etc.) and the original work of the person(s) submitting the work. If the submission is under consideration elsewhere, please contact TAB immediately if it’s accepted.

Poems generally should be single spaced; prose should be double spaced.

Please use MLA Style for any work that includes citation; see previously published essays for examples of our style.

TO SUBMIT YOUR WORK, you must create an account and register as an Author in our system so that we can track your submission and communicate with you easily. Once you have an Author account, go directly to our login page. Once you log in, you can submit your work by following these steps:

1. Click on the menu tab for User Home; that's your account.

2. Click the role of Author.

3. Under "Start a New Submission," click on the CLICK HERE hyperlink.

4. Choose the Journal Section according to what kind of work you're submitting, and use the Comments section if this is an art submission or a poem with special formatting. (You'll include a bio note later.) Click on Save and Continue.

5. Upload your file, then Save and Continue.

6. Enter the Author(s) information and the Title, then Save and Continue. Do not insert an abstract or list contributors/agencies.

7. We consider one type of work at a time (poems or an essay, for instance, not both at once). There's no need to upload a supplementary file. Just Save and Continue.

8. On the Confirmation page, click Finish Submission. You must hit this final button to submit your work.

9. When you return to your User-Author page (your account), you will be able to see your submission and track its progress.

If your work is accepted for publication, you will be awarded Tabula Poetica membership at the Sonnet level (at no cost to you); for more information about membership, see our donations page.

Occasionally, we will have special issues that have specific deadlines, and we’ll post that information here and/or in our Announcements.

Current and recent students, faculty, staff, and trustees of Chapman University are prohibited from submitting work; any formal affiliation must have ended at least three years prior.
